Our Final T-Ball (Dirt Castle) Game

You have to love T-Ball. It might very well be one of the most entertaining games to watch. Let's face it, even for die-hard baseball fans, a baseball game isn't the most action-packed, entertaining sport to watch. Not so with T-Ball. The person responsible for inventing the game probably claims some altruistic, idealogical motivation behind the development of T-Ball that has something to do with helping young kids learn the fundamentals of the game, but I don't buy it. I am sure that the real motivation is pure entertainment.

These kids, including Devon (maybe even especially Devon), are hilarious to watch. For the most part, every kid out there is too honest to stand there and pretend like they are really interested in what is going on at home plate. It doesn't take them long to realize that the probability of a baseball rolling in their general direction is extremely low, so they find their own entertainment. At first, it bothers you as a parent that your kid is not paying attention, but the humor of the entire scene soon overwhelms all feelings of frustration as you watch this little team of short attention spans find a way to entertain themselves.

One of Devon's favorite ways to pass the time away is to create small castles using the infield dirt. Watching his little pile grow throughout each inning was pure entertainment. I had to laugh when he finally took his glove off so that he could make more effective use of his hands with the dirt. The coaches tried to persuade him (and everyone else) to pay more attention, but eventually they too were overcome by the humor of the situation, so they too gave up, sat back and enjoyed the show.

You gotta love T-Ball!
