Brooke and I took Austin with us on our recent trip to California to attend the funeral servcies for Brooke's grandmother. Enduring six separate flights, four layovers, two long delays and enough turbulence to give a wooden roller coaster a run for it's money can be a challenge, even for a patient adult. Asking an 18 month old to patiently endure the same painful trip seems almost laughable. Brooke and I were both surprised at how well Austin did on our trip. This was his first time on an airplane and considering that we spent a total of over 24 hours either on a plane or in an airport, his momentary melt-downs were relatively infrequent and minor.
Since our trip to California was brief (and because charging to check bags is criminal), we decided to pack everything in our carry-on luggage. And, as I prefer to travel light, we didn't bring a stroller with us, so Austin travelled from gate to gate clinging to the handle of my rolling carry-on bag. Given the smile on his face, you would have thought he was at Disneyworld. As soon as we got off of the plane, he would run over to my bag with his oustretched arms and beg for a ride. Everyone we passed would smile or laugh as they saw our little suitcase jockey gliding through the airport. He had a lot of fun and lightened the mood of several weary travellers along the way.
